Oregon Coast Welcomes Gray Whale Migration During Annual Whale Watch Weeks

Each year, thousands of gray whales make their remarkable journey along the Oregon coast, and state officials are inviting residents and visitors alike to witness the spectacle during the annual Whale Watch Weeks. Hosted by Oregon State Parks, Whale Watch Weeks take place twice a year—once in late December and again in late March—coinciding with the gray whales’ migration between Alaska and Baja California. During these designated weeks, trained volunteers are stationed at 14 prime whale-watching sites along the Oregon coastline. These knowledgeable guides help visitors spot migrating and resident gray whales while offering insights into their behavior, migration patterns, and the coastal ecosystem. The program has become a popular seasonal attraction, drawing nature enthusiasts, families, and tourists eager to catch a glimpse of the massive marine mammals as they travel close to shore. Even outside of Whale Watch Weeks, the Oregon coast remains one of the best places in the country to observe gray whales. Many viewpoints, scenic overlooks, and coastal parks provide year-round opportunities to see not only gray whales but also other marine life, including sea lions, seals, and seabirds. State officials encourage visitors to bring binoculars, dress for coastal weather, and remain patient, as whale sightings can vary depending on ocean conditions and timing.
